John’s letter was written to help us recognize some clear signs of true Christian faith. The fifth of these signs is from 1 John 2: 18-28, what we might call, “A Life of Confidence (to the End)." I read a “Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook” that explains how to survive various life or death situations. How to escape from quicksand. How to survive a gunshot wound. How to escape a submerged car. How to survive a shark or bear attack etc. Not surprisingly, there’s no chapter on, “How to survive death” or “How to prepare for the End of the World.” John reveals why we can have confidence to the end of our lives; the day Christ returns, or calls us home. On my college ring are the words, “Let there be light,” the motto of the University of California. These words are intended to point to the light of reason and human knowledge; but in actuality they are a citation from the Book of Genesis ch. 1, where it is revealed that God is the source of all light. This is true enlightenment…to be illuminated by the light of God…the purifying light which speaks the truth about sin, leads us to the blessing of repentance, and restores our fellowship with him and others. A Life Lived in Fellowship

We live in a time of declining trust in spiritual leaders, an era of disappointment with organized religion, when alternative creeds and philosophies abound, where many feel that “truth is in the eye of the beholder.” In such a day, how can Christians be sure that their own spiritual experiences are genuine? In his letter, John gives us some clear signs of an authentically Christian faith that will also be compelling to others.

The first of these “life signs” from 1 John 1:1-4 is a life lived in fellowship. Now most professing Christians are pretty enthusiastic about “fellowship" but what is the real basis for our fellowship? What makes it any different from other social gatherings? That is the subject of John’s opening verses, where he testifies that…(1) this fellowship broke into history… when the Word of Life appeared in the flesh; (2) this fellowship existed from eternity…with the Father and the Son and (3) this fellowship is a growing family… marked by joy. When Jesus saidhe was going to send his disciples into Samaria as his witnesses (Acts 1:8), hemeant he was going to send them into enemy territory. Jews and Samaritans had agreed to hate oneanother for nearly a thousand years. To a Jew, the Samaritans were despisedhalf-breeds who intermarried with their Assyrian conquerors back in 723BC, andadopted some of their pagan religious practices. The Mishnah (a rabbinic commentary) says: “He that eats the bread of the Samaritans islike to one that eats the flesh of swine.” Yet there is no escaping that, aftertwo millennia, Jesus continues to send us with his message to the veryones with whom we’d rather not talk, or associate; and yes, even to those we may think...are swine. We may think of“Judea” today as the immediate surrounding area, the community in which we live andwork. Over the years, apopular college application question asks, “What historical moment orevent do you wish you could have witnessed?” These have been some answers: The building ofthe pyramids, the Declaration of Independence, Lincoln at Gettysburg, D-DayWWII, the assassination of JFK, Woodstock, the first moon landing. One personsaid, ‘my parent’s wedding.’ I noticedthat many said a day in the life of Jesus Christ, and in particular hiscrucifixion. Jesus told his disciples in Acts 1:8, “You will be my witnesses.” Now, the definitionof a “credible witness” in a court of law is “someone who has personal,believable, first-hand knowledge of an event or who has told the whole truth.” The reason I am a follower of Christ is that Ifind the testimony of the gospels to be believable, credible, accounts of whateye-witnesses heard and saw concerning him. None of us were “eyewitnesses” ofJesus’ life, death, or resurrection. Butas followers of the King who are filled with his Holy Spirit, Jesus promisesthat we will bear witness to him. In John’s gospel the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Comforter or theAdvocate. When we hear the word “comforter” today we may think of a quiltthat keeps us warm on a cold night, or we may thinkof one who cheers us up or makes us feel, well, comfortable. In reality, the word “comforter” comes from the Latin root “fortis” meaning “strength andcourage" (William Barclay). “In the drag races,” a friend wrote me, “they say ‘stay on it’ or ‘don't lift.’ In other words, “keep the throttle mashed to the floor from the starting line until past the finish line.” The Holy Spirit is the one who givesus the strength and courage to “stay on it,” to roll out instead of rolling over. It made an impression on me, and since then, forthe past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:"If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am aboutto do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too manydays in a row, I know I need to change something. I wonder how many of us live life with that kind of clarity? I wonder how many of us have a mission that isworthy of our life’s devotion? SteveJob’s mission was “to make acontribution to the world by making toolsfor the mind that advance humankind.” In other words, advancing humankind through technology. I love technology; and there is no doubt thathumankind has advanced technologically because of Steve Jobs. But has humankind advanced morally andspiritually? A good man can use technology to cure a disease or send a messageof hope. An evil man can use technologyto destroy a city or broadcast fear. Howmany of us are texting on our cell phones right now? How many hours do we spend a week onfacebook, or checking our email? I wantto invite you to unplug for a moment and consider whether you have a missionthat is worthy of your full attention,and your life’s devotion? In any group, team, or organization, there are two great needs: unity and diversity. We need unity -- unity of vision, unity of purpose; but we also need diversity -- diversity of abilities, gifts and perspectives. Nehemiah’s plan to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem would have come to nothing were it not for his ability to inspire unity among a variety of workers who shared his passion. “Without wine” said the Rabbis, “there is no joy”. Hospitality in the east was a sacred duty as it is to this day, and it would have been humiliating for the bride and groom to run out. For many people, life feels just like that. The wine has dried up...and that’s where John 2: 1-11 comes in, because on the third day of Jesus’ public ministry, at a wedding feast in Cana, we learn what we need when the wine of life begins to run dry: (i) intercessors who will go with us and for us to Jesus; (ii) fellow servants who will help us follow His directions (iii); witnesses to encourage us when they see the first signs of new life (9-10); (iv) and a believing heart when Jesus’ glory is revealed to us. The Bible is both an incredibly human and God-breathed collection of stories, histories, poetry, prophecies, and letters. We can divide the Bible up by book and author: the Protestant Bible contains 66 in all. We can divide the Bible up into categories like The Five Books of Moses, the Prophetic Writings, the Gospels of Jesus Christ, or the Letters of Paul. Another way to divide up the Bible, suggests John Ortberg, is by time frame. One of these time frames is what might be called the "Three-Day Story.” Beginning with the Third-Day of Creation in Genesis 1: 1-13, let’s take a look at these powerful stories over the next several weeks and what they have to teach us about getting from despair to hope, from chaos to creativity, and from barrenness to new life…because from the dawn of Creation the power of the Third Day is God’s promise to each of us who trust in him. What did you dream about this week? On this anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, many are dreaming about peace, the end of terror, war, and the triumph of good over evil. When C. S. Lewis first gave the BBC radio talks that he would later publish as Mere Christianity, it was the height of WWII; as many dreamed about the same thing: the triumph of good over evil and a world set right. Could this desire for justice, decency and fairness itself be a clue to life’s meaning? Lewis certainly thought so...and Scripture confirms it. For "God's law is not something alien, imposed on us from without, but woven into the very fabric of our creation. Last weekend, I was given a brochure in Little Tokyo that described Buddhism and its relationship to Christianity and other religions in a most interesting way. “Christians and Muslims believe that they will live in eternity with God if their life on earth has been spent in worthy and useful pursuits…. Buddhists on the other hand…believe that life is an everlasting cycle of birth and rebirth, that what is done during a lifetime determines the kind of life one will have in a future incarnation unless a person liberates him or herself from the cycle.” According to this leaflet -- Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism have something very significant in common…we are all redeemed by our good works. Now this is my question to those of you who profess to be Christians: Is this the gospel message? Does this accurately describe the message of Jesus? I’d like to return to Little Tokyo a bit later…but for now, let’s go to the house of a Pharisee in Luke 7: 36-50 where Jesus is treated with incredible disrespect on the one hand and surprising love on the other...it’s where we learn the one sure sign that we’ve truly understood the message of God's saving grace...and received it. The Story of the Greedy Farmer (May 30, 2010)

In Luke 12: 13-21, a man approaches Jesus, asking him to play the role of judge -- not an unusual thing to ask a rabbi in the first century. “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me” he cries. No doubt the father left his possessions to his sons in a lump sum -- which might not be a problem if there was peace between the brothers, but there wasn’t. So the man approaches Jesus like a judge on The People’s Court and asks him to enforce his right to his share of the inheritance. Jesus refuses to play that divisive role, however "legal" his claim might have been. He knew that his most important problem was not the division of his father’s property, but the division of a family over material possessions. “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions” Jesus says. "Now let me tell you a little story…” Here is Jesus’ signal that he wants to help the man, and anyone in earshot, understand that there are ways to be rich that are far more important than having great material wealth, and he does this by telling us how a greedy farmer who thought he was rich was really poor. For me, the answer came in Paul's letter to the Philippians. There we discover that the Apostle Paul says nothing about the pursuit of happiness, but he does say a lot about how prisons of adversity are transformed into sanctuaries of God’s presence by the gift of joy. The Last 'Scapegoat' (May 3, 2009)

These days, no one wants to be a scapegoat, unfairly blamed for the sins and failures of others, but everyone wants to have one. Let's face it, we are pretty much all masters of "the blame game" and the evasion of responsibility. Many are not aware that the word 'scapegoat' comes from a ceremony in which Aaron as High Priest confessed over a goat all the sins of Israel before leading it away into the wilderness (Leviticus 16: 20-22) as a sign of God's mercy. Followers of Christ believe that this foreshadowed the day when the Messiah Jesus would come to be the final scapegoat and our High Priest (Hebrews 10: 1-14), as he was led away to the cross and freely accepted blame for our sin. Jesus accepted blame even though he, of all people, was justified in blaming others. He forgave when he could have condemned.
